Commitment to Students
and Student Learning - Pre-lesson Student SEL Check In

Date Completed: December 2021

This artifact was from the first slide show presentation I️ created for Alternative to Practicum. The presentation is intended for use in a first-grade classroom, specifically in a math lesson on financial literacy. That being said, the artifact presented here is a pre-lesson check-in that allows for the teacher to gauge student mood and pinpoint a teaching direction relative to how the class is feeling, it also allows for further understanding of students who may be struggling or at risk. The pre-lesson check-in allows the students to choose between two options (happy and ready to learn or tired and need a reset) and indicate this to the teacher with inconspicuous movements or hand signs.. The lesson plan for this assignment also included strategies in the case that students do not feel ready to learn and need to reset. This pre-lesson check-in can be used across all subjects and can be differentiated and/or modified for different choices. This artifact addresses the commitment I️ make in regards to treating my students with respect and being sensitive to the factors that influence their individual learning. This will support my continued professional growth by allowing me to foster positive and trusting relationships with my students, and giving value to social-emotional learning throughout my classroom.

Date Completed: March 2022

This artifact was from my final project in Dance Methodology at the University of Windsor. The presentation is intended for use in a first-grade classroom, specifically in a dance lesson on the elements of dances: body. The artifact presented here is a part of the teacher slides, that includes ideas for differentiated instruction. This allows for the teachers who use this lesson for personal use to have a better understanding of how to differentiate the material for a few different scenarios including, but not limited to, students with PSWs, visual impairments or cognitive disabilities. This is a tool that teachers can use to make sure they are being cognizant of all their students and their different range of abilities to allow for an inclusive classroom environment. I would recommend this only as a starting off point for areas of differentiated instruction in specifically a dance or physical education class. This artifact addresses the commitment I️ make in regards to ensuring i am modifying the curriculum and making sure that all of my students are able to participate in, and enjoy activities. This will support my continued professional growth by allowing me to cater to students learning and give value to the diversity our classroom community has.

Professional Knowledge - Educational Psychology Journals

Date Completed: September 2021 to March 2022

This artifact was created as part of a University of Windsor cumulative project in Educational Psychology. To better understand and identify my stances on issues within this professional space, we were expected to provide five journal entries responding to various elements of educational psychology. This is a tool that I can use to reflect on my professional knowledge and how it is portrayed in my classroom and in the community as I develop as an educational professional. This artifact documents my commitment to reflect on learning theories, pedagogy, curriculum, ethics, and other educational materials in order to inform my professional judgement. This will support my continued professional growth by allowing me to have a toolkit of resources that i have reflected upon inorder to form opinions and have a better understanding of my profession.

Professional Knowledge - Assessment and Evaluation Teachers College Notes

Date Completed: September 2021 - March 2022

This artifact was made as part of an online assessment and evaluation course at the University of Windsor. The document was designed to demonstrate my development during the semester by displaying documentation of class notes, reflections, readings, and so on. This was something I had to do for several of my teachers' college classes, and I found it incredibly useful since it helped me stay on track and make sure I was taking effective notes, reviewing and reflecting on the materials, and having all of my information in one place. This artifact is intended to demonstrate my professional knowledge in assessment and evaluation, as well as how I am actively participating in ensuring that I can understand and apply it to learning theory, my pedagogy of teaching, the curriculum, professional ethics, educational research, and related policies or legislation. This will help my professional development by providing me with a home base to return to when I need a refresher, as well as something to constantly add to in order to generate an arsenal of knowledge for my future classroom in terms of assessment and evaluation.

Leadership in Learning Communities -Chasing Hazel Foundation

70334822_2506961886026826_7952066862609596416_o.jpg

Date Completed: October 2019

This artifact includes two photographs, one of which features the Chasing Hazel Foundation's emblem and the other of me and my colleagues after our volunteer session. In the fall of 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to serve alongside my classmates at the Chasing Hazel foundation's Off to College playgroup. I had the opportunity to meet some amazing children and their families. The play group's purpose is for families with children with Down syndrome to get together once a month for supervised play. The Early Childhood Education Students engage in a range of activities with the children and their families, while the parents also get the choice to engage in meaningful discussions with other parents in comparable positions. This artifact is meant to demonstrate my leadership in learning communities. Through this playgroup, I was able to foster a safe and supportive community that recognized not just the significance of my participation in the playgroup, but also the role that the children's families and caregivers play in this collaborative space. This will aid my professional development by allowing me new opportunities within the profession by networking with those involved firsthand.

Leadership in Learning Communities - Volunteer Dance Coach

Date Completed: 2014- Currently

This artifact includes five photographs including, the Ontario Secondary School Dance Fest logo, Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School, St. Joesphs High School and myself teaching a preschool dance class. I have been dancing for the last 19 years, since 2014, I️ have volunteered my time at Stella Maris Catholic Elementary school for their dance team. I️ have prepared the dancers with dances to showcase to their school as well as bring to Inspire Dance Competition. After I️ graduated high school I️ began volunteering for St. Thomas of Villanova, and St. Joesph's, dance team and dance classes. I️ would assist in the audition process as well as prepare the dancers for Ontario Secondary School Dance Fest. Since the outbreak, I've been working exclusively with the Stella Maris Dance team on a performance for their school's retirement assembly. We've been collaborating in person and via Google Meets. Dancing has always been a passion of mine, as have taught, and being in environments that allow me to do both is incredible. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to train in dance so that I may share my knowledge with others in the hope that they will discover their passions as well. Having said that, this artwork is intended to depict my leadership in learning communities. After receiving this from my dancing teachers, I consider it my responsibility to create safe spaces for others to express themselves. Volunteering my time is the least I can do to serve my community and share what I know. This will help my career development by providing me with more possibilities within the profession through first-hand networking with the people involved.

Professional Practice - Digital Technology Tech Tasks

Date Completed: September 2021- March 2022

This artifact was from my Digital Technology Course at the University of Windsor. The assignment was to include the tech tasks we’d had been creating throughout the course and share them with our professor allowing us to end up with a portfolio full of digital technology documents that can be used in the classroom. I enjoyed this assignment because I know that what I was creating for this assignment would be used in an actual classroom setting.  The capacity to create digital activities for my pupils is quite beneficial, especially at a time when many schools are adopting hybrid learning. This project and class also made me realize the necessity of being a good digital citizen and ensuring that the digital spaces I invite my students into are secure. This artifact was intended to showcase my experience in developing technology-based tools that are safe for other educators and my students to utilize in the classroom. This will help my professional development by allowing me to continue to build my tech task portfolio, allowing me to constantly reflect and expand on the use of digital technology in the classroom.

Professional Practice - Instructional Materials and Examples of Assessment for a Unit Lesson

Date Completed: April 2022

This artifact was made as part of a cross-curricular unit lesson plan for my most recent Alternative to Practicum experience. The lesson was designed for a first-grade classroom and the artifacts shown are examples of assessments and teaching materials related to the unit lesson, which encompasses social studies, math, language arts, and visual arts.

The first slide, "Assessment for Learning," is an example of a tool that may be used to visualize students' progress during a unit by determining whether the student is demonstrating a sufficient grasp of the content.

The following slide is an example of a self-assessment strategy that may be utilized after a class to determine how well the students enjoyed the lesson and how challenging the material was for them.

The next two slides include a worksheet followed by an answer sheet for a mini-lesson on sorting fabrics within the unit.

These artifacts focus on the use of my professional knowledge in the creation of assessments and resources that are relevant to the curriculum and my students. This will help my professional development by allowing me to reflect on the use of these resources after hopefully having the opportunity to try them out in a classroom.

Ongoing Professional Learning - Awards,  Achievements, and Certificates

During my first year of study in Teachers College at the University of Windsor to obtain my bachelor of education degree, I have participated in several optional and mandatory ongoing professional development opportunities in the form of online workshops. The last year has been my first time getting to experience a professional learning environment in this way. In my opinion, a benefit to the online professional learning workshops was the fact that teacher candidates were often able to choose the sessions they wished to attend during the day. As a teacher candidate myself, I greatly appreciated the opportunities we were provided with regarding these sessions. So much so, I often struggled to narrow down my choices because I felt like so many of the sessions would be valuable to me. In light of this, each workshop I attended successfully allowed me to develop knowledge within contexts that are immensely valuable when considering the journey i am currently on in crafting my identity as an educator. One of the most notable workshops I attended included the following session: “Helping Families Understand Their School-Age Children And Social Emotional Learning,” during the Marginalization and Vulnerability Social Justice Conference in January of 2022.

Rachel Stewart a Professor from St. Clair College, presented the workshop "Helping Families Understand Their School-age Children and Social-Emotional Learning." She began by addressing her experience in the education field which is ultimately why she is interested in sharing her knowledge on social and emotional development, as well as the importance of families in the school community. She then went on to describe inductive and deductive reasoning, as well as the connections and relationships they have with natural consequences. She then discussed Social Emotional Learning, which is an important component of education and human development (SEL). She explained that SEL is a process in which individuals acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes in order to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve goals individually or collectively, show empathy for others, establish and maintain relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. During the second half of the session, she discussed how to get families engaged in your classroom, what our responsibility as educators is with our student's families, and ways of increasing family involvement in the classroom.

This was one of the most memorable PLS sessions for me because of how she explained everything and utilized real-life examples to demonstrate how vital the knowledge she was providing to us was. Something that really stood out to me was how she taught us about inductive and deductive reasoning. Prior to this session, I had learned about inductive and deductive reasoning in my psychology studies, but I did not have a thorough understanding of it as I have now after listening to Rachel. That being said, the most important thing I learnt, and it was through that explanation, was the significance of including real-world scenarios and having discussions with not only your students but their families as well.
